THE CRETE SENESI
Set the following locations on Google Maps:
1 Trequanda
This is a small village at the edge of the area known as the Crete Senesi, an area characterized by geological formations called Biancane or Calanchi, the result of the erosion of the clay soil.
2 VIEWPOINT OF THE CRETE SENESI AGR. BACCOLENO
Between Trequanda and this panoramic point, you'll have the opportunity to take splendid landscape photos, some of the most characteristic of Tuscany. (Be careful, as wild animals often cross the road early in the morning, and flocks of sheep are often present. If they're near the road, it's best to stay in your car.)
3 CHIUSURE
A small village built on the Biancane cliff, from here you can admire our next stop.
4 ABBEY OF MONTE OLIVETO MAGGIORE
Large monastery of Benedictine monks rich in works of art, paintings, sculptures, a precious library and the monks' pharmacy.
5 BUONCONVENTO
A fortified village with an imposing wall.
6 MONTALCINO
The capital of this tour, home of the famous Brunello di Montalcino wine, is a splendid town worth exploring at your leisure, enjoying both the town and the fortress. There are numerous wineries, including the one inside the fortress, well worth a visit for both its selection of wines and its absolutely unique setting.
From Montalcino, you can return by setting TREQUANDA as your destination again. The road passes through the villages of TORRENIERI, SAN GIOVANNI D'ASSO, and MONTISI. From Trequanda, you can set the arrival point to Casale di Lucullo.
