Those who choose Il Casale di Lucullo often think of iconic Tuscan destinations like the Val d'Orcia, Chianti, the Crete Senesi, or the Val di Chiana. But there's a lesser-known, surprising, and authentic Tuscany just minutes away.

About 30 minutes from Il Casale di Lucullo, a landscape completely unlike any other Tuscan landscape opens up: the Balze del Val d'Arno.

The Balze del Val d'Arno are natural formations created by the erosion of ancient clay and sand sediments. Over time, water and wind have sculpted the terrain, forming vertical walls, pinnacles, and ridges.

The result is a unique landscape in Tuscany, resembling small canyons or gullies, with colors ranging from yellow to gold.

This area is also known for inspiring Leonardo da Vinci for some of his landscapes.

👉 In short: the Balze are one of the most unusual and least touristy natural landscapes in Tuscany.

The Balze are located in the Upper Valdarno, between Arezzo and Florence, easily reached in about 30 minutes from Il Casale di Lucullo.

They are perfect for those seeking:

  • an experience different from postcard-perfect Tuscany

  • authentic and uncrowded nature

  • accessible hiking trails

  • spectacular photographic views

One of the best ways to explore the Balze is on a simple and picturesque circular hike.

Starting point: Castelfranco di Sopra

Duration: approximately 2–3 hours

Difficulty: easy/medium

Type: circular hike

Recommended itinerary

From the village of Castelfranco di Sopra, descend along the path that leads to the Balze, gradually entering an increasingly wild landscape.

The route follows the so-called Acqua Zolfina trail, a nature trail that passes through:

  • panoramic views of the Balze

  • forested stretches

  • more open areas with views of the clayey formations

During the trek, you reach Piantravigne, a small rural hamlet surrounded by greenery, and continue to the Acqua Zolfina springs.

Here, the typical smell of sulfur is clearly noticeable: it's a curious and very characteristic stop.

The route then concludes by returning to Castelfranco di Sopra.

This type of experience is ideal for those who want to combine:

  • historic villages

  • iconic landscapes

  • lesser-known nature

The Balze are a perfect half-day trip, easily included in a longer itinerary through the main areas of Tuscany.

After a day of trekking amidst the sun, earth, and views, returning to the property becomes an integral part of the journey.

Staying at Il Casale di Lucullo, you can conclude your experience with:

a rejuvenating sauna

a jacuzzi immersed in the tranquility

the silence and slow pace of the countryside

This balance between exploration and well-being is one of the aspects most appreciated by guests.

To comfortably visit the Balze and simultaneously reach the main destinations in Tuscany, choosing a strategic location is essential.

Il Casale di Lucullo is ideally located for exploring:

  • Val d'Orcia

  • Crete Senesi

  • Chianti

  • Val di Chiana

  • and lesser-known places like the Balze del Val d'Arno
